Apollo College Mesa Celebrates Dental Awareness Month
MESA, Ariz. – (Feb. 08, 2010) – Apollo College Mesa is recognizing National Children’s Dental Health Month in February by teaming with the Kids R Our Future Child Center, to offer children dental hygiene and nutritional instructions for better dental care.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for not only our students to make a difference in the community, but for children to learn at a young age the best way to care for their teeth,” said Tammy Borders, dental assistant program director at Apollo College. “It’s important for children to learn the significance of daily oral hygiene, regular dental visits as well as the impact healthy food and snacks can have on their oral health.”
Student’s in Apollo Colleges dental assisting program will teach the children what to expect at a dental visit, instruct proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss dental decay (cavities) prevention, and review positive nutritional food and snack choices. Each child will leave with a goodie bag of dental products, coloring sheets and crayons, and informational pamphlets.
The American Dental Association (ADA) held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on Feb. 8, 1949. This single day observance became a week-long event in 1955. In 1981 the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time when teachers help students become more aware of good dental hygiene and tooth care.
